We observed changes in water quality induced by an internal surge on the southern slope of the north basin of Lake Biwa. After one and a half days of southerly winds, an internal surge passed through the observation line at midnight on 2 August 1994. When the internal surge arrived, the thermocline depth dropped more than 10 m and strong currents over 17 cm⋅s -1 were observed at 0.5 m above the bottom. Increase in concentration of nitrate in the upper layer was induced by the internal surge. This might show that nitrate was carried from the nutrient-rich lower layer to the nutrient-starved upper layer through the thermocline by temporal mixing in the thermocline induced by the internal surge. At the same time, high turbid area which contains high concentrations of particulate iron and manganese appeared just above the bottom where the thermocline touched the bottom, then this high turbid area spread offshore. This indicates that resuspension of bottom sediments and offshore transport of these sediments were induced by the internal surge.
