Rat liver arginase activity was decreased during the development of hepatoma by p-dimethylaminoazobenzene (DAB) feeding. The most decreased activity was observed at 30 days after initiation, but the enzyme at 120 days showed nor marked difference from that of normal rat. The arginase activity of DAB-induced hepatoma diminished about to one-sixth of the normal level. It was shown that DAB affected the isoelectric point of rat liver arginase; that is, pH 9.3 of the isoelectric point of arginase from normal liver was altered to 9.1 in the liver of rat fed of DAB for 90 days. Arginase from DAB-induced hepatoma and fetal rat liver showed the same isoelectric point hepatocarcinogen in rat liver like other enzymes.Rat liver arginase was influenced by ornithine and carbamoyl phosphate. The enzyme activity was depressed by addition of ornithine, but activated in the presence of carbamoyl phosphate.
