In 30 clinical cases, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were measured by Deltatrac during epidural anesthesia. Serum catecholamine concentration was measured in 5 cases. Marked increases in serum epinephrine concentration were observed in cases in which adrenaline-added Mepivacaine was used. Oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production decreased significantly during epidural anesthesia with plain Mepivacaine, but those changes were not marked during epidural anesthesia when adrenaline-added Me-pivacaine was used. Therefore, the influence of increased serum adrenaline during epidural anesthesia cannot be ruled out.
