A simple conceptual water balance model consisting of three storage zones (interception, soil moisture, groundwater) and the function of stormflow generation was developed to evaluate the effects of forest vegetation on long-term streamflow. It was applied to the Hitachi-Ohta Experimental Watershed (15. 7 ha) on which clearcutting and logging by skidders had been conducted. There was good agreement between the observed and calculated annual hydrographs for the ten water years from 1981 to 1990 based on daily streamflow data. The annual water balance calculated by the model indicated that the percentage of increased stormflow and baseflow relative to annual rainfall, owing to harvest, were 5 and 4%, respectively. This was almost equivalent to the 10% decreased interception. It was estimated that the increased stormflow mainly was generated from the area of the skid roadsystem expanded by harvesting, and the baseflow resulted from an increase of the net rainfall after harvesting.
