To assess the mechanism of abnormal leaf abscission in Hinoki, Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa S. and Z., caused by fenitrothion, the biodegrada-bility and metabolism of fenitrothion in susceptible and non-susceptible Japanese cypress leaves treated with radioactive fenitrothion labeled with carbon-14m-methyl group, were investigated. The rate of loss of the fenitrothion applied (ca. 300μg) on the surface of leaves was conspicuous, approximately 70_??_80 percent of the applied dosage disappeared within 24 hours of treatment. Most of this loss of 14C was due to vaporization from the leaves. The amount of fenitrothion was greater in susceptible Japanese cypress leaves than in non-susceptible leaves. Fenitrothion metabolites were p-nitrocresol and fenitrooxon on leaf surfaces and p-nitrocresol, p-nitrocresol-β-glucoside, and desmethylfenitrothion internally. No significant differences between susceptible and non-susceptible Japanese cypress were found in the quantities of fenitrotion metabolites formed prior to the leaf abscission period.
