Two-year-oldseedlings of Cryptomeria japonica were grown in the open and under the threedifferent degrees of shading. The shading was effected by black screen netting, decreasing light intensity to 70, 48 and 8% of the open. The height, diameterand weight of the seedlings were measured on Apr. 5, before the shading, andon June 20, Aug. 5, Sept. 20 and Nov. 5. The growth of seedlings for the springto summer period decreased with increasing degree of shading, while growthconditions from late summer to fall were more favorable under weak shadingthan in the open or under heavy shading. The most favorable degree of shadingfor growth expressed as relative light intensity was estimated as 65.9%on Sept.20and as 69.7% on Nov. 5. The decrease of growth caused by the shading wasmore significant in the root than in the upper parts.
