A new method for the direct conversion of carboxylic acids to alcohols using N,N-dimethylchloroimethyleniminium chloride and sodium borohydride was established. This method fulfills the chemoselective reduction of carboxylic acids with a functional moiety such as halide, ester, nitrile, and olefin.
