Investigation of the influence of direct current on ligament healing was conducted by applying 10 μA to the patellar ligament of the adult rabbits. After time periods for electrical stimulation, the combined effect of biomechanical and biochemical processes was analyzed. The results were compared with the non-stimulated, opposite side patellar ligament and with the normal ligament tissue. Application of electrical stimulation led to higher tensile stiffness through earlier change of the collagen types in the newly-formed tissue, resulting in significant differences in tissue components between the stimulated and non-stimulated tissue.
