<B>Background:</B> "Opening up too soon" is indicated by early trunk and pelvis rotation in cocking phase and related to throwing injury in baseball pitching generally. This study focused on the pelvis and trunk rotation in early cocking phase, especially foot plant (FP), and aimed to examine the factors of opening up too soon.<BR><B>Methods:</B> Two hundred sixty-two baseball pitchers were measured by motion capture system. Then rigid-body model was defined and employed in order to calculate the kinematic parameters that were related with each local coordinate system. To assess opening up too soon, four kinematic variables were used: pelvis rotation angle, pelvis rotation angular velocity, trunk rotation angular velocity and the central body of gravity position.<BR><B>Results:</B> Maximum pelvis rotation of angular velocity (MPRV) averaged 650.4 ± 115.64[deg/s],maximum trunk rotation of angular velocity (MTRV) averaged 546.7 ± 126.43[deg/s], and each appearance time of relation to FP (MPRT, MTRT) was 0.02 ± 0.039[s] and 0.05 ± 0.030[s], respectively. MPRT, MTRT were correlated to pelvis rotation angle at FP and the central body of gravity position was correlated to pelvis rotation angle at FP (r=-0.48,r=-0.63,r=0.54).<BR><B>Discussion:</B> To prevent early pelvis rotation at FP as in opening up too soon, these results showed that MTRV was reached at FP later and central body of gravity position was posteriorly-located at FP. Attempts to assess, modify, and ultimately optimize these results related to opening up too soon may provide a key to the reduction of injury prevalence in baseball pitching.
