Instability characteristics generated in a mixed-flow pump at a low flow rate adversely affect pump driving. This study investigates the internal flow and stall limit of two types of impellers of different blade loading distribution near the blade tip; in addition, it examines the mechanism by which the instability characteristics are generated. As a result, the following facts are clarified. Generally, the instability characteristics of the generating flow rate can be predicted using a diffusion factor and Taylor's pressure coefficient based on the results of numerical analysis. Wall stall is caused in both impellers, and the instability characteristics are generated by a reverse flow resulting from this wall stall. The instability characteristics of both impellers differ in the generating flow rate. Because it is easy to generate a wall stall in the impeller of aft loading, the instability characteristics generated at a high flow rate are significant.
