The effect of hypophysectomy on metabolism of 1-14C-linoleic acid in a mature rat testis is reported.<BR>1-14C-Linoleic acid was injected into the testis of the rats post-hypophysectomized 3 weeks before. Groups of animals were killed in 1/4, 1/2, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours after injection of radioactive linoleic acid. Fatty acid and lipid class composition of the extracted lipid of the testis of each animal, and also distribution of radioactivity in these compounds, were determined.<BR>Radioactivities were incorporated rapidly into all the lipid classes, however, disturbed decreasing curves of the radioactivities in the lipid classes were demonstrated, which indicated that hypophysectomy affects the equilibrium process between lipid classes and fatty acid pool. Also, hypophysectomy resulted in poor increases of radioactivities in fatty acids derived from 18:2 and 20:3.<BR>These results indicate that pituitary hormones play important roles in testicular lipid metabolism.
