In a Multi-Ethnic Asian ICD Population, Are There Differences in Anti-Tachycardia Pacing Thresholds?

Background: In ICD patients, pacing thresholds determine the success of anti-tachycardia pacing therapy and battery utilisation. We aim to determine if there are ethnic differences in the pacing thresholds in a series of Asian ICD patients implanted over a 1 year period. Methods: Threshold settings, lead and pulse generator brands, and relevant patient details, including age, ethnicity and gender of patients implanted with ICDs at a tertiary center in Singapore were collected and analysed. Results: 111 patients were studied. Mean age: 60±11 years; 79% were male. Ethnicity: 68% were Chinese, 11% Malay, 16% Indian and 5% others. The mean threshold for Chinese: 0.87V@0.5ms±0.29V@0.5ms, Malay: 0.89V@0.5ms±0.36V@0.5ms, Indian: 0.95V@0.5ms±0.27V@0.5ms, Others: 0.91V@0.5ms±0.35V@0.5ms. There were no significant differences in threshold by ethnicity, age, gender or device company. Conclusions: In our multi-ethnic Asian ICD population, there were no significant differences in pacing threshold.
