The general survey and the results of the investigation of the hot spring curative treatment at Yutagawa Spa may be summarized as follows:1) Of 203 persons who asked for doctors' advice, women were large in number, and the majority of them were old men and women over 50 years of age suffering from circulatory diseases.2) The spa visitors are mostly inhabitants of Yamagata prefecture and those living in the southern section of Akita prefecture. The largest number of them are farmers.3) Over half the number of the spa visitors come to the hot spring with a specific purpose of balneological therapy.4) Those who visit Yutagawa Spa for the first time for curative treatment were only 37.5%, the rest being those who visit the spa regularly every year and only 5% of them have ever consulted doctors for direction in the hot spring bathing before coming to the spa.5) The number of days they stay at the spa for curative treatment is comparatively long. 55% of them stay from 11 to 15 days and 4% for over 16 days.6) About 79% of the spa visitors take bath 4 to 6 times a day for curative treatment.7) About 45% of the spa visitors drink hot spring water for curative treatment.8) Symptoms of bath reaction are observable in 15% of the spa visitors, being less in number and slight in degree.9) Bathing the legs only in the spa at 41.5°C for 20 minutes, practised at Yutagawa Spa, is effective in lowering both the maximal and minimal blood pressure, the higher the blood pressure is, the greater the degree of lowering is.For the reasons cited above, this spa is made use of by comparatively aged people living in the farm villages near the spa who are suffering from circulatory diseases or high blood pressure, and the spa is considered to have a good effect on circulatory diseases, because it is comparatively low in temperature, less in the number of symptoms of bath reaction, and because of the effectiveness of the partial bathing on the blood pressure.
