• Using "Unagi-yu" (alkaline sulphur spring) and "Genzo-yu" (acid vitriol spring) at Narugo Spa, the auther studied the effects of hot spring bathing, single or successive, on the liver glycogen of healthy rabbits, and of those which had been injected previously with lecithine and whose livers had been injured experimentally, and obtained the following results:1) Single bathing usually decreases the reserve of the liver glycogen. There are, however, a few cases where the bathing in "Genzo-yu" has increased it.2) Single bathing increases the production of the liver glycogen in healthy rabbits and those which had been injected with lecithine. On the other hand, in the rabbits whose livers had been injured experimentally, it decreases the production of the liver glycogen.3) Similarly, the successive bathing decreases the reserve of the liver glycogen, but it increases the production and storage of the liver glycogen.4) The successive bathing, however, lowers the production of and reduces the storage of the liver glycogen in the rabbits whose livers had been injured experimentally. But in the stage of recovery, it increases the production and storage of the liver giycogen.5) From the viewpoint of the reserve of the liver glycogen, the bathing in the hot spring accelerate the liver function in the healthy rabbits and those whose livers had been injured experimentally and which are in the stage of recovery.6) It is difficult to make a conclusion as to the effect of the hot spring bathing on the reserve of the liver glycogen, but the results from the experiments performed leads me to say that the mechanism of the action is considered to be due to the non-specific stimulation of the hot spring through the autonomic nerve system. It may further be said that the stimulation of the function of the reticuloendotheliar system induced by the hot spring bathing also plays a role in the action.
