General survey of hot spring curative treatment and some medical studies at Zao Spa were reported.Further report has been made of the experiments in vitro on the germicidal power of this hot spring and of the experiments with rabbits on the effect of this hot spring on the healing of wound.It may he summarized as follows:1) Spa visitors seeking curative treatment are mostly infants and children, being a majority in number.2) Spa visitors are mostly afflicted cutaneous diseases. Zao Spa is effective in curing cutaneous diseases, such as trichophytia, neurodermatitis, prurigo, chronic eczema, prurigo Besnier, verruca, etc.3) 73% of the spa visitors stay for 3 to 5 days, the duration of their stay for curative treatment being much shorter than that at other hot springs. 66% of them take bath 3 to 5 times a day.4) 34.9% of the spa visitors developed the symptom of bathing reaction, being accompanied with diarrhoea, constipation, dermatitis and languor in the body.5) Only 1.2% of the spa visitors for curative treatment drink hot spring, and only 1.3% of them follow the medical directions of the physician.6) Zao Spa water has a powerful germicidal-action on trichophyton, staphylococci, streptococci and colibacilli.7) The curative effect of Zao spa on the wound-healing was found from experiments with rabbits to be of the curative coefficient K=0.12485.
