INTRALUMINAL PHASIC PRESSURE CHANGES OF THE URETER RECORDED THROUGH A HYPODERMIC NEEDLE INSERTED INTO THE LUMEN

One method of examing ureteral function is the measurement of intraluminal pressure changes which occur during peristalsis. To record the pressure change, two different procedures may be employed, one of which utilizes an indwelling ureteral catheter (urometry), the other a needle directly inserted into the lumen (the direct insertion method). For the sake of comparison, both were performed simultaneously on anesthetized dogs weighing 9-12 kg, with the following results.<BR>1. When a No.4 or larger sized Fr. catheter was introduced into the ureter, urine retention above the tip of the catheter usually occurred and the regularity of interperistaltic interval was disturbed. When employing a No.3 Fr. ureteral catheter, both contracting pressure and resting pressure increased with little change in interperistaltic interval. Furthermore, since the time constant of the No.3 Fr. cathetertransducer system is longer than that of No.4, pressure wave forms were distorted. This phenomenon was most evident as the urine flow rate or intrabladder pressure increased.<BR>2. In the direct insertion method using a 22G. hypodermic needle, both contracting pressure and resting pressure were recorded with little interference with the normal physiological state. The irregularity of wave forms was minimal.<BR>3. The conclusion was that for animal with narrow lumen of the ureter, the 'direct insertion method' is most useful.
