EFFECTS OF VARIOUS IONS AND ADRENALINE ON THE MECHANICAL ACTIVITY OF RABBIT MESENTERIC VEIN

Effects of potassium, calcium ions and adrenaline on the mechanical and electrical activity of rabbit mesenteric vein were studied with the sucrosegap method and the electronic transducer. Krebs solution at 37°C and gased with O<SUB>2</SUB> was used thoughout.<BR>Spontaneous rhythmic contractions were seen in longitudinal strips cut from the mesenteric vein of rabbit. The contraction occurred at a frequency of 7 to 11 per minute. And the spontaneous action potentials (about 1 mV) were seen very rarely for long exposure in the normal solution.<BR>High potassium-Krebs solution produced the strong contraction and Ca-free-Krebs solution decreased the resting tonus and diminished the rhythmic contractions. Adrenaline produced the strong contraction at a concentration of 2×10<SUP>-7</SUP> and of 2×10<SUP>-6</SUP>g/ml. In Ca-free solution, adrenaline produced only a small increase of resting tonus at a concentration of 2×10<SUP>-7</SUP> but high potassium increased the resting tonus considerably.
