There has been great social and administrative progress in services for the multiply severely handicapped in Japan. The present state of the handicapped in terms of their main diseases(ethiological classification), and their activities in daily life(ADL)is described. This description is based on the data on outpatients accumulated by the National Welfare Association of Severely Handicapped children in their research on 56 facilities in Japan in 1985. An example of medical and educational rehabilitation conducted at one facility is also described.
