Background and Objectives; We studied the citation of corrected papers using the impact factor [IF] of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), a core journal among general magazines on medical science, as a yardstick to determine the extent to which researchers trust and cite the contents of corrected papers. Methods; The lowest IF value (22, 412; for 1995) and the highest IF value (31, 736; for 2002) for the NEJM over the last 10 years were used for comparative purposes. The same calculation parameters used to determine the NEJM's IF scores were used in the present study to enable direct comparisons. To compare the IF value for 1995, we used correction notices appearing for papers that had been published in 1993 and 1994 to select papers for further analysis. The Science Citation Index database was then used to search for citations of the corrected papers. The same procedure was used to compare the IF value for 2002, using corrected papers that had been published in 2000 and 2001. The average number of citations per corrected paper for each search was then compared with the respective IF value for 1995 or 2002. A P-value of 0.01 was regarded as significant. Results; Ninety-three corrected papers originally published in 1993 or 1994 were identified, and the average number of citations for each paper was 19, 215. The scope of the number of citations was 0.247 and the standard deviation was 35.113. Ninety-three corrected papers originally published in 2000 or 2001 were also identified, and the average number of citations for each paper was 29, 441. The scope of the number of citations was 0.419 and the standard deviation was 57.253. A significant difference between the overall IF value for the NEJM and the average IF value for the corrected papers was not observed for the 1995 data or the 2002 data. Conclusions; Corrected papers appearing in the NEJM appear to be cited as often as papers that have not been corrected and have the same impact on the academic world.
