A list of novels and poems describing patients and illness in modern Japan has been compiled. The list contains about 50 works by 28 novelists and 9 poets. The list will be updated on the author's web site. The works included in the list have the following characteristics, unlike “Tobyo-ki”, (true stories about patients):1. Novels and poems that describe the state of mind of patients and their families using literary expressions, like metaphors; the descriptions are often moving, causing patients to reflect on their life and illness.2. The novels may describe sexual and/or immoral events that are seldom found in “Tobyo-ki”.3. In “Tobyo-ki”, only the first person is used, whereas the second and third person are used in novels. These points of view enable novels to look deeply into the lives of all the characters in the work.4. According to the personal histories of the authors, most of the events in the works are based on events in the authors' own lives. This personal perspective brings a sense of reality to the works that may be impressive to the readers.Although only “Tobyo-ki” are read and analyzed in most patient studies, the narratives of literary works should also be studied.
