• A history of the mechanization of the catalog system of the National Library of Medicine prior to the initiation of MEDLARS in 1964 is described. The new series of Index Medicus released in 1960 was aimed at solving the backlog problems caused by the Current List of Medical Literature via mechanization of the editing process. Since there were only a few alterations in the process, the change was only a temporary solution. However, it is unavoidable in the modernization process that a new editing system be implemented while waiting for innovative information processing systems to be developed.
