The authors sent questionnaires on the CD-ROM information retrieval system to libraries in hospitals. The purpose was to obtain information on (1) prevalence, (2) changes caused by the system's introduction and (3) the actual situation of management of the CD-ROM system. Seventy-eight of 110 libraries answered the questionnaire. Fifty-one percent and 72% of the libraries had already acquired or planned to acquire the system by March and December of 1993, respectively. In 67% of libraries, the CD-ROM system was highly evaluated in terms of having improved the information retrieval service, especially from the following two aspects. With the introduction of the CD-ROM system, users have increased in number because of end-user searching, and significant numbers of nurses and co-medical staff were noted to be among them. Some libraries stopped subscribing to bibliographic materials like Index Medicus, Cumulated Index Medicus, and Igaku Chuo Zasshi at the time of introduction. The actual situation of management of the system is far from satisfactory. It is important for the library staff to acquire sufficient information skills, along with the help of Japan Medical Library Association, to provide better educational opportunities.
