The base hydrolysis of <I>cis</I>-[CoX(etaH)(en)<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUP>2+</SUP>(X=Cl or Br, etaH=2-aminoethanol, en=ethylenediamine) has been studied. The hydrolysis results in the formation of [Co(eta)(en)<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUP>2+</SUP> (≈35%) and [Co(OH)(etaH)(en)<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUP>2+</SUP> (≈65%) at <I>I</I>=1.0 (KNO<SUB>3</SUB>), 25 °C, the product ratio being independent of the pH. The base hydrolysis has also been studied in the presence of sodium azide.
