Kinetics and mechanism of HgCl2–CuI and HgCl2–CuBr reactions were studied in solid state. It has been demonstrated that HgCl2 reaches CuI by surface migration and the reaction proceeds through counter diffusion of Cu+ and Hg2+. Both the reactions follow the parabolic rate law and the activation energies are 77.11±3.84 and 51.08±1.29 kJ/mol. While the former is a complex multi-stage reaction, the latter is a simple exchange process.
