The reaction of 1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-imidazoline-2-thione with methyl iodide followed simple second order kinetics in polar solvents, whereas in less polar solvents the reverse process made a significant contribution to the overall rate. The solvent effects on the forward rate constant were linearly related to those on the rate of the reaction of tetramethylthiourea with methyl iodide. A plot of <I>ΔV</I>0\neweq <I>vs.</I> <I>Δ</I>\bar<I>V</I>° was linear with a slope of 0.33. From the volume changes and enthalpy changes measured, three transition state indices, (<I>Δ</I>2<I>V</I>\neweq⁄<I>Δ</I>2\bar<I>V</I>°), <I>n</I>T and α were determined in acetonitrile, <I>ca.</I> 0.33, 0.32, and 0.41, respectively.
