Kinetic studies of the oxidation of 2,3-dihydroxy-2-propenal (triose reductone) by the peroxodisulfate ion (S<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>8</SUB><SUP>2−</SUP>) were carried out between pH 4.1 and 5.9 at various temperatures (10–30°C) and for ionic strengths (<I>I</I>) (0.07 to 1.07 M (1 M=l mol dm<SUP>−3</SUP>)) which were adjusted using NaClO<SUB>4</SUB>. The pH dependence of the reaction rates revealed that the singly-charged anion (RH<SUP>−</SUP>) was chiefly responsible for the reaction, while undissociated reductone was inactive to peroxodisulfate ion. The rate constant (<I>k</I><SUB>2</SUB>) of RH<SUP>−</SUP> with S<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>8</SUB><SUP>2−</SUP> was 0.79 M<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP> at 25°C and <I>I</I>=1.07 M (Δ<I>H</I><SUP>\neweq</SUP>=37 kJ mol<SUP>−1</SUP>, Δ<I>S</I><SUP>\neweq</SUP>=−123 J deg<SUP>−1</SUP> mol<SUP>−1</SUP>). A relationship of log<I>k</I><SUB>2</SUB>=−0.95±1.88<I>I</I><SUP>1⁄2</SUP>⁄(1+<I>I</I><SUP>1⁄2</SUP>) was found at 30°C.
