The extraction of organomercury(II)(RHg<SUP>+</SUP>, R; ethyl, <I>n</I>-propyl, <I>n</I>-butyl, phenyl) with 8-quinolinol into benzene has been studied by means of spectrophotometry. This study confirmed that there was no co-extraction of electrically neutral species RHgOH by its investigation of the effect of the pH on the extraction of ethylmercury(II) chloride into benzene. Moreover, it was found that RHg<SUP>+</SUP> forms 1:1 complexes with both HPO<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>2−</SUP> and PO<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>3−</SUP>. The formation constants of these complexes and of hydroxo complexes have been determined.
