• The electroreduction mechanisms of terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid in acidic solution were studied by molecular orbital (MO) calculations. Further, a practical stepwise route to 1,4-benzenedimethanol has been developed by the electroreduction of <I>p</I>-(hydroxymethyl) benzoic acid.
