ESR study on the reactions of 1,3-diene cation radicals in low-temperature matrices.

The reactions of the cation radicals of 1,3-butadiene, <I>cis</I>- and <I>trans</I>- 1,3-pentadienes, 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, and 2,3-dimethyl- 1,3-butadiene have been investigated by low-temperature matrix ESR. The cation radicals produced in the irradiated solid solutions of CCl<SUB>2</SUB>FCCl<SUB>2</SUB>F were found to react with their neutral parents at temperatures above ca. 110 K, forming radicals with allylic ends. On the other hand, 1,3-pentadiene cation radicals in the matrices of CCl<SUB>4</SUB>, CCl<SUB>3</SUB>F, and CCl<SUB>3</SUB>CF<SUB>3</SUB> were found to isomerize into cyclopentene cation radicals, irrespective of the cis and trans forms. The possible mechanisms for the reactions and their implications in the cationic polymerization of dienes are discussed.
