1,1′- and 2,2′-Dipyrenylpoly-ynes (I<I><SUB>n</SUB></I> and II<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>, <I>n</I>=1–6) have been synthesized. It was found that the bathochromic shift of the longest-wavelength absorption maxima (λ<I><SUB>L</SUB></I>) according to the increase in the number of acetylenic bond (<I>n</I>) can be well expressed by the following formulas:<BR>I<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>:λ<I><SUB>L</SUB></I>=3.7<I>n</I><SUP>1.7</SUP>+430 (nm in toluene)<BR>I<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>:λ<I><SUB>L</SUB></I>=12.6<I>n</I><SUP>1.4</SUP>+327 (nm in toluene)
