Diamagnetic penta-coordinate Co(I) complexes of formula, [Co(<I>p</I>-CH<SUB>3</SUB>C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>NC)<SUB>4</SUB>(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)]X (<B>1</B>) and [Co-(<I>p</I>-CH<SUB>3</SUB>C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>NC)<SUB>3</SUB>(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>]X (<B>2</B>) (X=Cl<SUP>−</SUP>, Br<SUP>−</SUP>, I<SUP>−</SUP>, ClO<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>−</SUP>, BPh<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>−</SUP>) were obtained from CoX(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB> or CoX<SUB>2</SUB>(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>. Their <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR spectra served to deduce the trigonal bipyramidal structure. The aromatic ring proton NMR spectra and the IR CN stretching absorptions of radial modes were discussed in terms of the dπ-pπ back bonding.
