A position-dependent deuterium effect on the phosphorescence lifetime of <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′,<I>N</I>′-tetramethyl-<I>p</I>-phenylenediamine was found. Aromatic ring protons and methyl protons were shown to contribute to the radiationless transition independently and differently. Important terms in the decay constant are briefly discussed.
