The rate of the base hydrolysis of pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) ions was measured in the presence of multivalent anions at a constant ionic strength. The results were analyzed in view of the <I>S</I>N1 C.B. mechanism considering the formation of ion-pairs. The ion-pairing has the effect of suppressing the acid dissociation of the complex or the formation of its conjugate base, which acts as the intermediate of the reaction. This effect out-weighs the adverse effect of the probable acceleration of the rate-determining step of the base hydrolysis. The association constants obtained for [CoCl(NH3)5]2+·SO42− and [CoCl(NH3)5]2+·P3O93− were 40±5, and 82±5, respectively (<I>I</I>=0.1, 25°C).
