• The <I>n</I>-π absorption spectra of propionaldehyde, <I>n</I>-butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde were measured in various solvents and the effects of substituents and solvents on the <I>n</I>-π absorption spectra were investigated. For the former effect red shifts instead of blue shifts reported as the characteristic of <I>n</I>-π transitions were observed. The latter effect was studied using McRae's equation. Hydrogen bonding between solute and solvent molecules is also considered.
