The experimental studies were made on interaction between thyroid hormone and insulin, especially concerning hormone balance. <BR>The results are summarized as follows : When a large dose of insulin was injected into rabbits, the thyroid gland's reaction to inhibit the hypoglysemic effect of insulin action, was spontaneous. Naturally, adrenocortic-, adrenomedullar- or anterior pituitary-hormone played the role, but thyroidhormone also reacted as one of the anti-insulin factors. This was suggested by the fact that this restoring power of thyroid was most strong in normal, retarded in alloxanized diabetic, and slight in thyroidectomized rabbits. <BR>Reacting mode of thyroid to insulin-injection was as follows : <BR>1. Thyroid-hormone, already existing in tissues and blood, reacts and metabolized first (at 3 and 6 hours, increased PBI, decreased BEI and increased its metabolites chemically and chromatographic-ally measured). <BR>During this time, the thyroid-gland itself also releases the rapid acting substances parallel T<SUB>3</SUB>, its related compounds (at 3 and 6 hours increased PBI<SUP>131</SUP>, T<SUB>3</SUB> and not identified substances in chromaiogramm). <BR>Then the thyroid gradually releases the thyroxine to restore the unbalance which occured after the injection of large dose of insulin (at 24 hours increased T<SUB>4</SUB>, chemically and chromatographically measured, and increased synthesis of it in the thyroid homogenate). <BR>2) In thyroidectomized-animals, injected T<SUP>4</SUP>-I<SUP>131</SUP> more rapidly metabolized than controls, when insulin was injected. <BR>3) In alloxanized-diabetic animals, the changes of thyroid-function above mentioned, were not only slighter than those of normal, but also their abnormalities were restored to normal by insulin injection. <BR>4) “In vitro” studies on rat liver-, muscle (diaphragm) and kidney slices, using Warburg apparatus, showed that in diaphragms, added insulin accelerates the promoting action of O<SUB>2</SUB>, consumptionsrate of thyroxine, and adsorption of T<SUB>4</SUB>-I<SUP>131</SUP> and its deiodination by the tissues. Namely, it suggested that the added insulin into incubation medium promoted thyroxine-I<SUP>131</SUP> utilization by the diaphragm.
