Benzoic acid adsorption was used to extract parathyroid hormone from human urine. Bioassay was carried out using the rate of P<SUP>32</SUP> excretion in parathyroidectomized rats. Between the dose level of 5 to 20 USP units, the precision of the assay was satisfactory as indicated by the degree of precision, between 0.2 and 0.3.<BR>In 5 normal subjects the amount of parathyroid hormone in 24-hour urine was 18.4±3.2 units. In 8 cases of hyperthyroidism before treatment, 61.1±6.9 was found, the difference being significant. (P>0.01) Elevated values were also observed in chronic nephritis, hypertension, nephrolithiasis and essential hypoproteinemia. In postoperative hypoparathyroidism with manifestations of tetany, parathyroid hormone was undectable by the present method.
