In the upper reaches of the river and the more distant from the prefectural road along the river, the shorter the people's stature is. The arithmetic mean and mode of their statures by age and sex groups are low compared with those of the people living in the lower reaches, and the difference is significant for statistics. The Author found out two periods when growth was slow, in their periods of development. One is about the fourth month after birth, and the other is about the age of 10.
There is nothing peculiar about the drinking water of the uppe reaches. The food they eat is insufficient in protein and calories. The intermarriage of cousins is 29.2 per cent in the upper reaches, 12.6 per cent in the lower. The mean age, when menarche takes place is fourteen years and eight months in the upper reaches, thirteen years and three months in the lower.
The mean serum total protein of the adults living in the upper reacher reaches is 6.00 g, /dl in male, 7.08 g/dl in female. These values are lower than those of the people in the lower reaches (7.58 g/dl in female). The people in the upper reaches have latent hypoalbuminemia.
Endocrinological tests revealed that the people belonging to the group of lowest height in the upper reaches have hypofunctions of the ductless glands, especially in the 11 to 13 age groups.
It is reasonable therefore to presume that the prime cause of the low stature is latent hypoalbuminemia.
