The purpose of this investigation has been to study the adrenocortical function of patients with angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and hypertension. For this reason plasma cortisol levels, the adrenocortical response to ACTH and the removal rate of the infused cortisol from the plasma were investigated.
1) Higher values for plasma cortisol than any obtained in the controls were noted in patients with angina pectoris, cardial infarction and hypertension, while there was no similarly marked difference in urinary 17-OH-corticosterone amounts.
2) Six hour ACTH infusion and ACTH-Z injection (i.m.) resulted in a more marked increase of plasma cortisol and urinary 17-OH-corticosterone excretion in some patients above mentioned than in the controls. These experiments indicated that some of these patients have hyperfunction of adrenocortical glands.
3) The removal rate of the infused cortisol from the plasma was much protracted in some of these patients with higher plasma cortisol leves. Amounts of excreted urinary 17-OH-corticosterone generally decreased in all of the patients above mentioned. These experiments suggest that the reduction of cortisol to tetra types is impaired in these patients.
