1) The thyroid of the aged responds distinctly to the injection of Thyrotropin after 24-48 hours. The PBI values in the serum rose more than 1γ%, and the radio-iodine excretion rate in urine showed clear increase 8-24 hours after the injection.
2) The average weight of the aged thyroid is reduced by 20-30% compared with that of the younger group, and the most distinct histological features of the aged thyroid consist in a) the flattening of the follicular epithelium b) the increase of the conneective tissue, and c) the variety of the stainability of the colloid. Judging from these features, 73.6% of the thyroid in the sixties, 75% in the seventies, 86.6% in the eighties showed the senile phenomenon.
3) The content of the butanol-extractable-iodine in the aged thyroid seems to be somewhat reduced compared with that of the younger.
Those results show, those of the 1st report together, the function of the senile thyroid is, to some degree, declined in contrast with that of the younger group. This hypofunction, however, does not seem to be so distinct as to be unable to respond to the physiological demand.
