Myofibrous organization of the intrinsic muscles of the human foot is reported in this study. The intrinsic muscles of the human foot were examined and compared with those of hand muscles from the same subject to clarify the functional characteristics of the human foot.<BR>The following results were obtained : 1) Concerning the muscle weight ; the abductor hallucis was the heaviest of the individual muscles of the human foot. The abductor hallucis, abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti secundus brevis and flexor hallucis brevis ranked next in order. Compared with the hand muscles of the same subjects, these muscles were larger than the corresponding muscles in the hand, except for the abductor hallucis. Among the other muscles, the weight of the dorsal interossei muscle was the greatest, next was the plantar interossei and the smallest, the lumbrical. 2) Concerning the total number of muscle fibers in the cross-sectional area of the muscle belly : the abductor hallucis, abductor digiti minimi, third dorsal interossei and plantar quadratus were the largest group among the human foot muscles. Ranked next were the other thenar muscles, the forth dorsal interossei and the flexor secundus brevis. Compared with the corresponding muscle of the human hand, the thenar of the foot was smaller and the hypothenar of the foot was larger than in the hand. 3) Concerning the size of the muscle fibers ; those of the abductor hallucis, flexor hallucis brevis and flexor digiti secundus and tertius brevis were very large and corresponded to those of the largest muscle group in the lower extremities. Compared with the hand muscles, most muscles of the thenar and the interossei of the foot were larger than those of the hand, and the hypothenar of the foot was equal to that of the hand.
