The concentrations of twenty three amino acids in blood plasma before and after hemodialysis with artificial kidney of Coif type were determined for the thirteen patients with chronic renal failure.<BR>1. The concentrations of glycine, alanine and valine, which molecular weight were comparatively small, and also glutamine were markedly decreased after hemodialysis.<BR>2. The concetration of glutamine was compared with those of glutamic acid, asparagine and asparatic acid, which had structural resemblances to glutamine. The concentration of the glutemine of the patients with chronic renal failure before hemodialysis was nearly equal to its meanvalue of ten normal persons and showed a marked decrease by hemodialysis, but the concentrations of glutamic acid, asparagine and asparatic acid before and after hemodialysis did not show such tendenecy.<BR>3. From the relationship between the concentrations of plasma urea nitrogen before and after hemodialysis and the residual perentage of glutamine after hemodialysis, it was shown that the residual percentage of glutamine was low in the cases with rather small difference of plasma urea nitrogen and vice versa.<BR>The close correlationship exists between these two variables except those of two patients with advanced renal failures. I considered from these results that the difference of the concentrations of plasma urea nitrogen before and after hemodiailysis was high in the cases with low function of urea synthesis in the liver and thir difference should be small in a subject with normal liver function.
