Studies were performed to investigate the blood pressure-lowering effect of homotaurine-choline (HT-ch) and its influence on experimentally induced hyperlipidemia. HT-ch is a molecular compound of 3-aminopropanesulfonic acid (homotaurine) and choline chloride. The results were as follows:
1) HT-ch produced a hypotensive effect in rats, the degree of action being approximately intermediate between homotaurine and choline.
2) The data obtained indicate a possible involvement of the central nervous system in the hypotensive action of HT-ch, as is the case of homotaurine. Besides, it was also suggested that this compound of higher order being a derivative of choline might affect on effectors of cholinergic postganglionic fibers.
3) Young rats with low body weights which had been maintained on a high fat diet containing 2 per cent of cholesterol and 1 per cent of cholic, acid for 3 days developed a marked hypercholesterolemia. Elevation of other serum lipids was also prominent in these animals.
4) Administration of taurine or 1-amino-2-hydroxypropanesulf onic acid brought about lowering of serum lipid levels in rats with hyperlipidemia receiving high doses of these compounds. In contrast, a significant decrease in serum lipid concentration occurred following administration of homotaurine even in low doses, and the antihyperlipidemic effect was moreover marked in rats receiving HT-ch.
5) Normal rats given homotaurine exhibited a significant fall of serum lipid level whereas administration of HT-ch failed to produce any significant change in this respect.
