The authors studied on the herd size, body colour, and distribution of the Japanese serow, Capricornis crispus, in the Tanzawa Mountains (alt. 1, 623m., at Hirugatake, the highest summit), Kanagawa Pref., Japan. According to our observations and other sights in winters from 1966 to 1970, the serows usually seemed to be solitary, but rarely to be combined with two or three individuals. The body colours, observed from 1968 to 1970, were classified into four types which were black, black with a dorsal white spot, dark brown, and whity. Whity serow was observed only one example among twelve sights. The serows were always sighted along boundaries between young plantation and various forests. Sites sighted the serows were stable at Fudakake and Karasawa, in the Tanzawa Mountains, from 1968 to 1970. Considering sight records collected from 1960 to 1970, it is supposed that the serows were widely distributed in the Tanzawa Mountains.
