A female hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius named "NAYOKO" in Ueno Zoo, Tokyo, gave birth her first baby on the 20 th June, 1963. It was the time when she was 2 years and 11 months old. At that time, she was comparatively small in size, and still remained some of her milk teeth.
The mating was noticed by a keeper Nov. 5, 1962, with her father "DEKAO", when she was 2 years and 4 months old. But the signs of the rut was not so clear, and the mate itself also was unsure for us, whether it was done completely or not. After the birth, the mother hippopotamus and her baby were doing very well, and the baby grew quite normally.
This is considered as a notable record of precocious maturity of female hippopotamus in captivity.
