Field observations on two species of bats at Kamakura

Following five species of bats have been recorded from Miura peninsula: <I>Pipistrellus abramus</I> TEMMINCK, <I>Miniopterus schreibersii japoniae</I> THOMAS, <I>Myotis macrodactylus macrodactylus</I> TEMMINCK, <I>Rhinolophus ferrurn-equinum nippon</I> TEMMINCK, and <I>Rhinolophus cornutus cornutus</I> TEMMINCK.<BR>Among them <I>Miniopterus s. j</I>. and <I>Rhinolophus f. n</I>. are the most common species as cave dwellers. Both species are dwelling in the remains of quarry in the northern Kamakura and are segregated each other in the same cave.<BR>The size of population of <I>Miniopterus s.j</I>. remarkably varies according to the season, and the species disappears from this region in winter. <I>Miniopterus s. j</I>. flies with the inter femoral membrane stretched tightly, and seems to be on the wing almost throughout the night.
