The incidence of otosclerosis in Japanese is low and accordingly most of the otosclerotic ears have escaped attention.One of the authors (H. S.) studied the stapedectomized footplates from ears with fixed stapes syndrome and confirmed foci which belonged to the classification of a true otosclerosis.Detections of otosclerosis in Japan at the present time depends upon the physician actually looking for evidence of same. Tympanometry and stapedial reflex are particulary helpful in the diagnosis, in combination with conventional pure tone audiometry.
