• Tympanometries of 18 patients were measured under GOF anesthesia and NLA anesthesia in order to obtain information about the functioning of the middle ear under general anesthesia.Tympanometry is a relatively simple method to measure the middle ear pressure. So far, there are few reports concerning the influence of general anesthesia on the middle ear. This report is designed to estimate the general anesthetic effect, especially of nitrous oxide anesthesia, on the middle ear pressure and function as it relates to the gas effusion theory. Theoretically calculated pressure of the middle ear agreed with the measured values. Some conclusions were obtained about the relationship between change of pressure in the middle ear and the strength of the tympanic membrane.
