The therapeutic effect of Ifenprodil on definite Meniere's disease and possible Meniere's disease was clinically studied in 20 out-patients from the Department of Otolaryngology of the University of Tsukuba for 5 months from November 1980.The results obtained are as follows:1) As to the subjective symptoms, Ifenprodil was effective in 85% of the patients. No significant differences in the effect of Ifenprodil on the subjective symptoms were observed between definite Meniere's disease and possible Meniere's disease.2) As to the objective symptoms, Ifenprodil was effective on the Mann's test (83.3%) and the nystagmus test (50%), but not effective on the hearing test (15%).3) The labyrinthine preponderance was measured by the computerized rotary chair system. Improvement of the labyrinthine preponderance was statistically significant (P<0.01: t) after 4 weeks' medication of Ifenprodil.4) Only one side effect of gastric discomfort was observed in one case, which was not severe.5) In the light of these results, Ifenprodil appears to be effective for the treatment of Meniere's disease and peripheral dysequilibrium.
