To clarify the functional and morphological influence of profound deafness on the development of the auditory system, the responses of the inferior colliculus to electrical stimulation of the cochlea were investigated in chinchillas. In the normal animals, hundreds of responses were recorded from inferior colliculus with tonotopic organization. On the other hand, few or no responses were recorded in the animals deaf from birth or deafened as adult despite small histological changes in the inferior colliculus. These results imply that the functional integrity is more affected than the morphology by the deprivation of hearing in the central auditory system.
