Nasal polyps are common, but the etiology and mechanism of formation are not known. It has been reported that degranulated mast cells are present in all polyps and that histamine levels are high in polyp fluid. Therefore, allergy is believed to contribute to the formation of nasal polyps. To prevent recurrence after surgical removal, I used anti-allergy drugs in 12 patients with nasal polyps. The control group consisted of 14 patients with nasal polyps who were treated mainly with lysozyme after surgery. The patients were examined for recurrent nasal polyps six months after surgery.1) Recurrence of nasal polyps was noted in 35.0% of the treated and in 64.0% of the control group, a significant difference.2) The incidence of recurrence was related neither to the operative procedure nor to the degree of cell infiltration in the stroma.
